Testing
and installation of any electrical item should be performed by a
qualified electrician. Alcatel cables are tough, chances are if the floor is not heating you
should: 1)
Check the breaker first to see if it is on and working correctly. 2)
Use a volt meter to check the incoming voltage to the thermostat,
it should read 120 volts or 240 volts. Depending on which system you
have purchased. 3) Check the cable with a digital ohmmeter. The
installation instructions contain a chart that lists the resistances for
our cables. The resistance is measured with the power off and the red
and black wires from the meter on the two solid copper power leads from
the cables. Resistance should be within 10% of the listed values. 4)
Should these all check out properly please contact us. Chances
are it’s a wiring problem and may be solved easily and at no cost. 5) Ensure that incoming power matches thermostat voltage as shown on back of thermostat.
Electric
Trouble-Shooting Millimat Installations Only
qualified persons should do electrical installation or repairs. We
recommend hiring a qualified, licensed electrician to install heating
cables, mats and related electrical components. If you or your
electrician have problems please read the following trouble-shooting
tips. Any
work should be done with the power removed from the circuit, unless
otherwise noted. Caution: Make
sure that the power supply to the mat or cable is correct. The wrong
voltage, ie., 120 volts on a 240 volt mat, could harm the mat or cable. 1.
Mat resistance measurement is different than the nameplate label a.
Use a digital
ohmmeter that will read from 0 ohms to 1000 ohms. b.
Test the
resistance across the two solid copper wires at the end of mat or cable. c.
Compare the
reading with the chart included with the mat or cable 2.The
control is not operating. a.
Check the mat
resistance with your ohmmeter again. b.
Have you
supplied the correct voltage, (120 or 240 volts) to the control? c.
If using the
Aube or OJ Floor or Floor warming or heating thermostat is the sensor
wire connected to the control? They must be connected for the thermostat
to operate properly. d.
If using a
Dimmer Switch, read the instructions carefully to make sure it is
properly wired. Set dimmer to highest level to insure full voltage is
provided to the mat. e.
Has the
thermostat been programmed correctly? Check programs and temperature
settings. f.
If using a
programmable timer read the instructions carefully to make sure it is
properly wired. Also check timer battery. Has the timer been programmed
correctly? g.
Has the GFCI
"tripped" on the floor warming thermostat, indicating a
possible wiring problem? 3.
The Mat doesn't get warm. a.
Have you
supplied the correct voltage (120 or 240 volts) to the control? Check
electrical schematics and control instructions. b.
Have you
supplied the correct voltage to the mat or cable? Check electrical
schematics and control instructions. c.
Are the sensor
wires properly connected to the thermostat control? Check electrical
schematics and control instructions. d.
Use your
digital ohmmeter to confirm the thermostat sensor has a reading of
10,000-ohm (10K) at 77 degrees Fahrenheit. e.
Are the
controls operating correctly? If the Programmable Timer has a battery,
replace it and make sure it has good contact. f.
If using a
wall or breaker panel mounted outlet GFCI, read the instructions
carefully to make sure the "line" (Power supply) and
"load" (heating mats) are properly wired. g.
If using more
than one mat or cable make sure both are wired in parallel and connected
to the control. h.
Make sure the
controls are not conflicting. A timer could be turning off the mat
before it can heat up. The
ohm meter shows the mat resistance is open or at infinity. a.
The mat has
been damaged and must not be energised. If mat has been damaged, stop
immediately and look for the damaged area. If this damaged area cannot
be found, take ohm readings, record the readings.
